Project Details

Beltway Beatdown is a 2D casual arcade game that puts a political-satire spin on the familiar whack-style mechanic. Players react to caricatured political characters appearing across the screen and strike them with a mallet or gavel before they disappear. The project needed more than a simple tap interaction. It required progression, character variety, strategic choices, rewards, upgrades, and competitive systems without losing the immediacy that makes casual games easy to pick up. The result was a mobile experience built around quick reactions, timing, and knowing when to swing and when not to.

Scoping Out the Project

Build a complete casual game around one simple mechanic.

  • Develop the game for Android and iOS using Unity.
  • Structure 50 levels across East Wing and West Wing.
  • Create political caricatures, environments, UI, and gameplay assets.
  • Scale difficulty through speed, timing, targets, and hole count.
  • Connect currency, upgrades, rewards, leaderboards, and monetization.

Keeping One-Tap Gameplay Varied

Character behaviour, spawn locations, and reaction windows had to keep one-touch gameplay varied without making the controls harder to understand.

Speed, appearance frequency, hole count, hit targets, and timers needed to rise together without creating abrupt or frustrating difficulty spikes.

Dozens of political caricatures needed distinct personalities while sharing one readable 2D style, consistent proportions, and a coherent satirical visual language.

Connecting Progression Systems;

Currency, mallets, power-ups, bonus rounds, rewards, and purchases had to support each other instead of feeling like separate progression systems.

Rewards, Bonus Rounds and Leaderboards;

Rewards, Bonus Rounds and Leaderboards

Daily rewards, bonus rounds, scoring, currency, and leaderboards give players additional goals beyond standard level completion and support repeat engagement.

Result & Achievement:

Beltway Beatdown expanded a familiar tap-and-whack concept into a broader 2D casual game built around timing, character recognition, progression, and strategic choices. The delivered experience brought together multi-level progression, political caricature art, varied character behaviours, an earning and spending economy, equipment upgrades, power-ups, bonus gameplay, rewards, and competitive systems within one cohesive and scalable mobile framework.
